Thunder Bay Literacy Group is currently accepting applications for the following position:

Title: Literacy Instructor

Purpose: Develop & deliver effective literacy instruction that addresses the individual Learner Plan goals of each learner in the class

Time: 18 month leave coverage. Position opening October 2018

Location: Program office

Deadline: September 19, 2018, 4:00 p.m. – no followup emails or phone calls, please.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct initial, on-going and exit assessments
  • Work with each learner to establish realistic learning goals and to track progress
  • Develop and regularly update individualized learning plans that are goal appropriate
  • Plan and deliver individualized programs to support the learning plan [for Essential Skills Levels 1-3]; to learn more about Essential Skills levels check http://www.esdc.gc.ca/eng/jobs/les/index.shtml
  • Develop innovative and effective learning activities that are age and goal appropriate,
  • Create, identify or adapt resources, including e-learning, that motivate the learner and support his/her needs
  • Supervise classroom volunteer(s) and/or placement student(s)
  • Maintain up-to-date files and records in a timely manner
  • Inform Program Director of any issues or problems arising within the class
  • Provide learners with appropriate referrals to other programs or services, as needed
  • Become familiar with and adhere to MAESD LBS guidelines and other directives related to program delivery [ex: TBLG Mission Statement, various policies and procedures]
  • Attend staff meetings and assist in program/policy development, as required
  • Attending professional development as recommended/ approved
  • Participate in the continuous improvement of services for the area of teaching responsibility or as determined by supervisor
  • Fulfill other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Experience relevant to the position
  • Experience teaching one-on-one and in small groups

  • Experience in teaching adults, assessment and curriculum development

  • Experience with, and sensitivity to literacy issues and individual learning styles
  • Commitment to Lifelong Learning; 
well organized, innovative, patient, and resourceful
  • Ability to adapt to on-going change

  • Ability and desire to work with a diverse group of people including adults with exceptionalities

  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

  • Ability to use computers as a teaching tool and for administrative tasks
